Photos: Budapest City Park

On a clear day, you can look up Andrássy from the downtown core and see the regal, copper-green statues of Heroes’ square rising into the sky. From Hősök tere, the park spreads out to the north, east and south. The zoo, baths and circus are to the north, the ice rink and castle are straight ahead, and the largest playgrounds and green spaces are to the south.

Enjoy the photos below, or learn more about what makes City Park so wonderful.

Melting snow in the City Park left a few puddles great for splashing things into.
Job crawls in the lush green grass of City Park. Having this park nearby has helped us not yearn so much for the green expanses of Bellingham.

This large pond, which contains water from an underground thermal spring, steams on cold days in the winter.
Throughout Budapest, ice-skating is a revered winter tradition. This rink, located in the City Park, is the largest in the city. The rink, first opened in 1870, measures roughly 12,000 square meters.

Hungary is big on statues, so it wasn’t a huge surprise to be greeted by this massive statue of George Washington.
After a snowfall, you’ll find a number of locals ― kids and adults alike ― sledding down a collection of hills in the City Park. The hills are surrounded by large berms at the bottom that keep speedsters from crashing into nearby trees.
The grounds of Vajdahunyad Castle are perfect for a summer stroll (or run).
Whether it’s winter, summer or somewhere in between, the Városliget is a great place for the whole family to have fun.
Not only is this one of the world’s biggest ice-skating rinks, it also features great scenery, such as the intriguing Vajdahunyad Castle, seen here in the background.
