Photos: Eger, Hungary

Matthew Anderson · May 6, 2017 · Leave a Comment

Eger is primarily famous for two things: its castle and its red wine.

The wine, which can be found throughout Hungary in bottles labeled Egri Bikavér (Eger Bull’s Blood), is a red blend that by law can be produced only in the region and with certain percentages of various grapes. With a history of more than 500 years, it’s considered one of the world’s oldest wines.

Beneath the streets of Eger lies an extensive series of wine cellars that visitors can tour for a fee. We chose not to partake this trip, but we hear the “City Under the City” tour is fascinating. Next time.

“Walking around” is actually Anderson code for “goofing around.”
Brittany and the older boys walk the castle walls and enjoy (Brittany does, anyway; the boys can’t see over the edge) a gorgeous view of downtown Eger.
Our three boys would like to express their gratitude to whoever it was who decided that a well-designed bridge is one with little-person viewing holes.
While we walk to the castle in the morning, the sidewalk cafes start getting set up for the lunch crowd.
While we explore the castle grounds, Elijah attempts to spot our location on a visual recreation of the area.

The castle walls in Eger afford astounding views of the city below.
We were fortunate to have warm spring days in Eger, and the town ― frequented by Hungarian tourists, it seemed ― was bustling.
The open space in the center is Dobó István tér, the main square in Eger, Hungary, as seen from Egri Vár, the Castle of Eger.
Inside the museum on the castle grounds, the boys inspect a recreation of the famous 1552 siege.
The highest point on the castle grounds features three wooden crosses and stunning views of downtown Eger.
Pizza AND snack cups? Yeah, we didn’t think one would be enough. Thankfully, the boys’ backpacks had room for both, and we were able to wait for our train to Budapest without anyone getting hangry.
“Wait for me, guys! I can climb, too!”
We’re headed up to the castle. The boys’ motto: Why walk on the path when you can … not?
