Photos: Madrid, Spain

A large capital city, Madrid has a substantial international feel; it doesn’t feel nearly as Spanish, if that makes sense, as we would have thought. It is gorgeous, though. Our holiday apartment in the Lavapiés neighborhood is set amid undulating cobblestone streets that curve past colorful buildings set hard against the sidewalks. Cafes, shops and street markets are everywhere, and people are a constant presence.

Check out the photos below, or read more about our trip with kids to Madrid.

Entrance to the Museo Nacional del Prado during free hours, which are the last two hours of the day, requires waiting in line outside for tickets. We arrived shortly before 16:00, and the line grew quickly behind us. In front of us, the line was nearly twice this long. All in all, though, we ended up waiting only for approximately 30 minutes.
The Palacio de Cristal was built in 1887 to exhibit rare plants from the Philippines, which at that time was a Spanish colony.
This is the Puerto Atocha train station in Madrid. Notice the similarities to Nyugati?
Another great spot to visit with kids while in Madrid is the Plaza Mayor, a large cobbled square completely surrounded by lovely buildings perforated with arches that allow pedestrians to enter and leave. It can be quite crowded in summer, we’ve heard, but in January it was nice and quiet, but no less beautiful.
Brittany and the big boys cross the Río Manzaneres on the Pasarela de la Arganzuela in Madrid.
In a city bereft of playgrounds for children, this one in Río Park was actually quite cool.
Looking up at the inside of the main dome in the Real Basilica de San Francisco el Grande, painted by Goya.
The train platforms at the Puerto Atocha station in Madrid are at the end of a lovely jungle path.
Goofing off: It’s what kids do. Here, it’s taking place in the colorful city of Madrid.
An old Roman necropolis is preserved at Plaça Vila de Madrid, visible from the nearby sidewalk and from a bridge that extends over the area.
Madrid is home to some fun, funky architecture.
The sleek Renfe Ave train in the foreground is all set to speed us from Madrid’s Puerto Atocha station to the Delicias station in Zaragoza.
